Year 6

Year 6 at Falcon

Year 6 is a very special year at Falcon — it’s the children’s final year with us, and we’re proud to help them grow into confident, resilient and independent young people, ready for their next exciting step to high school.

Our Year 6 Classes

  • Toucans –  Mrs Irvine, Mrs Hartell and Mrs Zieba
  • Eagles –  Mrs Witton, Mrs Johnson and Miss Westrop
  • Doves – Mrs Fuller(Mon to Wed)/ Mrs Harrod (Thurs - Fri)  and Mrs Eve
  • Kingfishers – Miss Buckland and Mrs Bauer

Leadership and Responsibility

As the oldest pupils in the school, our Year 6 children are given extra responsibilities and leadership opportunities. These include roles such as Team Captains, Science Ambassadors and Digital Leaders. We encourage them to take ownership of their learning, their behaviour and their contributions to school life, developing the skills and confidence they’ll need for secondary school.

A Rich and Exciting Curriculum

Year 6 is packed full of fantastic learning opportunities that the children love. Some highlights include:

  • WW2 Topic & Evacuee Day – A trip to Time and Tide Museum dressed as evacuees brings history to life.
  • Crucial Crew – An important day learning key safety skills such as basic CPR, water safety, and understanding the roles of the emergency services.
  • Art at the Gallery – A visit to the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts to explore the gallery and gain inspiration for their own sculptures.

SATs and Celebrations

Year 6 is also SATs year, and we support our pupils every step of the way. In the spring term, we hold a mock SATs week to help children understand what to expect and build their confidence.

Once the real SATs are finished, we celebrate their hard work with our legendary picnic and water fight — a day that staff and pupils look forward to every year!

Life Skills and Adventures

In the summer term, we run a special ‘Being an Adult’ maths unit where children learn about careers, wages, taxes and the cost of living.

A highlight of the year is our residential trip to Eaton Vale, where children take part in a range of team-building activities such as canoeing, rifle shooting, archery, crate stacking, trapeze and more. They return tired, muddy and smiling — it’s always one of their favourite memories of Year 6.

A Memorable Farewell

To celebrate their time at Falcon, Year 6 put on a year group performance for parents and enjoy a special end-of-year trip. On the very last day, we hold our Leavers’ Assembly, where achievements are recognised and awards presented. The day ends with the much-loved traditions of shirt signing and the tying of ties on the tree — a true Falcon send-off.

We work hard in Year 6 and have high expectations of our pupils — but we make sure to balance this with fun, laughter and plenty of unforgettable memories.
